A REEV has a large high-voltage battery for electric driving, so why does it still need a normal 12V battery?

The answer is simple: the two batteries do different jobs.

The high-voltage battery supplies energy to the electric drivetrain. The smaller 12V battery powers many of the everyday electrical systems needed to operate the vehicle.

This also means a REEV can have plenty of charge in its main battery but still have trouble powering up if the 12V battery becomes weak.

What Does the 12V Battery Do?

Depending on the vehicle, the 12V battery supports systems such as:

  • Central locking
  • Interior and exterior lights
  • Infotainment
  • Vehicle computers
  • Sensors and control modules
  • Safety and electronic systems

It also helps activate the vehicle’s main high-voltage system when you start the car.

The high-voltage battery, on the other hand, stores the energy used by the electric motors for driving.

Battery Main Purpose
High-Voltage Battery Powers the electric motors and supports electric driving
12V Battery Powers low-voltage electronics and helps activate vehicle systems

What Happens If the 12V Battery Gets Weak?

A weak 12V battery can cause problems even when the main traction battery is charged.

Possible signs include:

  • The vehicle not powering on normally
  • Problems with central locking
  • Multiple warning messages
  • Infotainment resetting or failing to start
  • Unusual electrical behaviour

These symptoms can have other causes, so they do not automatically mean the 12V battery needs replacing. If they continue, it is worth having the vehicle checked.

Why the 12V Battery Matters in Dubai

Dubai’s high temperatures can be demanding on automotive batteries.

Heat can accelerate battery deterioration, particularly for vehicles that spend long periods parked outdoors. This makes regular battery checks useful in UAE conditions, especially as the battery gets older.

You do not need to monitor it every day. Including the 12V battery in routine servicing is usually enough, unless you start noticing unusual electrical behaviour.

Does the REEV Charge the 12V Battery Automatically?

Yes.

During normal operation, the vehicle’s high-voltage electrical system supports the 12V system automatically. The driver does not normally need to charge the 12V battery separately.

However, just like the battery in a conventional vehicle, it still wears over time and may eventually need replacement.

Does This Apply to iCAUR REEVs?

Yes. iCAUR REEVs combine a high-voltage electric drivetrain with the low-voltage electrical systems used throughout the vehicle.

The high-voltage battery supports electric driving, while the auxiliary battery remains responsible for many of the vehicle’s electronics and control systems.

The Bottom Line

A REEV still needs a 12V battery because the large traction battery and the smaller auxiliary battery have completely different responsibilities.

The high-voltage battery powers the electric drivetrain. The 12V battery supports the electronics needed to operate the vehicle.

For UAE drivers, the main thing to remember is simple: having plenty of charge in the main battery does not mean the 12V battery can be ignored. Include it in regular servicing and have it checked if you notice unusual electrical problems.
