An SUV’s turning circle tells you how much space it needs to turn around. A smaller figure generally means easier manoeuvring in tight spaces.

That may not matter much on Sheikh Zayed Road, but it becomes noticeable in a basement car park. A narrow aisle or a bend between concrete pillars can reveal something a highway test drive rarely does: how easily the SUV fits into your everyday surroundings.

What Is a Turning Circle?

Turning circle usually means the diameter of the smallest circle a vehicle can complete with the steering at full lock.

You may also see turning radius in a specification sheet. Radius is half the diameter, so a 5.5-metre turning radius equals an 11-metre turning diameter, provided both use the same measurement method.

Check the terminology before comparing vehicles. A figure of 5.5 metres does not necessarily mean an SUV turns twice as tightly as another listed at 11 metres.

Kerb-to-Kerb vs Wall-to-Wall

Specifications may also distinguish between two measurements:

  • Kerb-to-kerb: Based on the outer tyre’s path during the turn.
  • Wall-to-wall: Accounts for the outermost sweep of the vehicle, including bodywork extending beyond the wheels.

The wall-to-wall measurement is generally larger and is particularly relevant near walls and pillars. Compare figures measured on the same basis; manufacturers may publish one or both.

Where Turning Circle Makes a Difference
Situation Why turning circle matters
Making a permitted U-turn A tighter turning circle can help you turn within the available road width.
Entering a parking bay It influences how much aisle space you need to line up with the bay.
Navigating a basement car park Tight bends between walls and pillars may require extra adjustments.
Leaving a confined parking area A tighter turn may reduce the number of forward-and-reverse movements needed.

Turning circle matters most during slow manoeuvres where space is limited.

An SUV can fit between the parking lines yet still be awkward to turn into the space. The width of the aisle and the position of nearby vehicles matter too.

Does a Smaller SUV Always Turn More Tightly?

Not necessarily. Wheelbase and steering angle both influence turning circle, so overall length alone does not tell the whole story.

Wheelbase is the distance between the front and rear axles. A shorter wheelbase generally helps a vehicle turn more tightly, but the result also depends on how far its wheels can steer and the steering-system design.

Light steering is a separate quality. It reduces the effort needed at the wheel, but it does not automatically reduce the space needed for a turn.

When comparing SUVs, consider turning circle alongside overall length, width including mirrors, and visibility from the driver’s seat.

Can Parking Cameras Make Up for a Wide Turning Circle?

Cameras and sensors help you judge clearance. They do not change the path the vehicle can physically follow.

A surround-view camera can help you position the SUV, but a narrow aisle may still require you to reverse and adjust. Use the display alongside your mirrors and direct observation, particularly near pillars and low obstacles.

What to Try During Your Test Drive

Include a few everyday manoeuvres in a suitable parking area:

  • Reverse into a bay and pull out again.
  • Navigate a tight corner while leaving comfortable clearance.
  • Check how easily you can judge the front corners and rear wheels.
  • Notice how often you need to reposition.

If your home parking is particularly tight, bring measurements or photos of the entrance, aisle and bay. The direction you approach from and the position of nearby pillars can matter as much as the space itself.

There is no single ideal turning-circle figure for every driver. The best test is whether the SUV feels manageable in the places you use regularly.
