Your REEV charges quickly at first, but as the battery approaches 80%, the charging speed drops. The last part of the session takes longer than you expected.
This is usually normal. Here’s why it happens, whether a more powerful charger will help and when it makes sense to unplug.
Why Does Charging Slow Down?
Your battery does not charge at a constant speed. As it gets closer to full, the vehicle reduces the power it accepts to protect the battery. This slowdown often becomes noticeable around 80%, although the exact point varies by model and charging conditions.
This is also why fast-charging times are usually quoted for a specific interval, such as 20–80%. That figure does not tell you how long a full charge will take.
Will a More Powerful Charger Help?
Only if your current charger is supplying less power than the car can accept.
The rating on a charging station is its maximum output. Your REEV has its own charging limit, which also changes during the session. Switching to a more powerful charger will not override the car’s limit or prevent charging from slowing as the battery fills.
Some stations also share power between vehicles, so the full advertised output may not always be available.

Should You Unplug at 80%?
If you are using a public fast charger and already have enough range for your plans, stopping around 80% can save time. There is little benefit in waiting for a full battery if you will not need the extra charge.
Stopping at 80% to save time is different from choosing a daily charging limit. Follow the guidance for your particular model, including any instructions about charging to 100%.
When Is Slow Charging Worth Checking?
A gradual drop in charging speed as the battery fills is expected. Repeated interruptions, error messages or unusually slow charging at a low battery level are worth investigating.
Check the charger screen for notices and contact the operator if the session keeps failing. If the same problem occurs at different working chargers, arrange a vehicle check.
For an everyday charging stop, focus on the range you need. Once you have enough for your plans, you do not have to wait for the display to reach 100%.
