When comparing electric and range-extended SUVs, you may notice the letters CLTC or WLTP beside the advertised driving range. They are easy to overlook, but they matter: two range figures measured under different tests do not make a fair comparison.

For UAE buyers, understanding these labels helps put brochure numbers into perspective. Here is what each means, how they relate to everyday driving, and what to check when choosing a REEV.

What Is the Difference Between CLTC and WLTP?

CLTC stands for China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle. It was developed around driving patterns in China, with a relatively low average speed and frequent stops.

WLTP stands for Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure. It uses standardised laboratory testing to measure figures including energy consumption and electric range. The passenger-car driving cycle includes low-, medium-, high- and extra-high-speed phases.

Both provide a repeatable way to test vehicles. The difference is the driving conditions they simulate.

What you are comparing CLTC WLTP
Basis of the test Driving patterns developed for China An internationally harmonised testing procedure
Driving profile Lower average speed and more stopping Higher average speed, including an extra-high-speed phase
Electric range result Often produces a higher figure for the same vehicle Often produces a lower figure than CLTC
Best use for buyers Comparing vehicles with CLTC-rated range Comparing vehicles with WLTP-rated range
Guaranteed range on UAE roads? No No

Research comparing electric vehicles under these cycles found longer range under CLTC than under WLTC, the driving cycle used within WLTP. The size of the difference varied between vehicles.

So, if one SUV advertises 200 km of electric range under CLTC and another advertises 180 km under WLTP, those numbers alone do not establish which will travel farther on your usual route.

Why Is CLTC Range Often Higher?

Electric vehicles can be particularly efficient at lower speeds. Higher-speed driving requires more energy to overcome air resistance, while slowing down creates opportunities to recover some energy through regenerative braking.

CLTC’s driving pattern can therefore produce a longer electric-range result than a test with more demanding high-speed sections. That does not mean the vehicle has a larger battery or gains extra capability. It means it was measured under different conditions.

Compare CLTC with CLTC, and WLTP with WLTP. Also check that the figures apply to the versions you are considering, including the battery, drivetrain and wheel specification.

Does WLTP Tell You the Range You Will Get in Dubai?

WLTP is a useful comparison tool, but it is still a laboratory result. It does not reproduce your particular commute, the weather that day or your air-conditioning settings. Cabin air conditioning is switched off during the standard range test.

In everyday UAE driving, several factors can change how far a charge takes you:

  • Highway speed: Sustained faster driving increases aerodynamic resistance.
  • Cabin cooling: Air conditioning uses energy, particularly when cooling a hot interior.
  • Passengers and luggage: Additional weight increases the energy needed to move the vehicle.
  • Tyres and accessories: Tyre condition, pressure and equipment such as a roof box can affect efficiency.
  • Driving style: Frequent hard acceleration uses more energy than smooth, steady driving.

A school run through Dubai and a motorway journey to Abu Dhabi place different demands on the same SUV. Neither CLTC nor WLTP should be treated as a promise that every charge will deliver an identical distance.

Our guide to why REEV driving range changes from day to day explains how those changes can appear on your dashboard.

For a REEV, Check Which Range Is Being Quoted

When looking at vehicles such as the iCAUR 03T REEV and iCAUR V27 REEV, distinguish between electric-only range and total combined range.

Electric-only range describes the distance covered using stored battery energy under the stated test conditions. Total combined REEV range includes the contribution of petrol used by the range extender to generate electricity. It is therefore not the distance the vehicle can travel on a battery charge alone.

There is another detail worth checking: “combined” does not always mean battery plus petrol. In a WLTP specification, “combined electric range” can mean the electric range measured across all the driving phases, rather than the city phase alone. Read the full label before comparing it with a REEV’s total range.

For daily commuting, focus first on electric-only range and your charging opportunities. For longer journeys, consider total range alongside fuel consumption when the range extender is operating.

How Should You Compare Range Before Buying?

Start with your actual routine. If you normally cover 60 km a day, explain whether that includes city streets, motorway driving or a mixture of both.

Then ask the showroom team:

  • Which test cycle supports the quoted range?
  • Is it electric-only range or total range using both battery energy and petrol?
  • Does it apply to this exact UAE-market trim?
  • Is there local driving data for similar speeds and conditions?

Avoid assuming that subtracting a fixed percentage from CLTC gives an accurate WLTP figure or a reliable Dubai range estimate. An estimate is not a certified result for that vehicle.

When you book an iCAUR test drive in Dubai, bring your daily distance and charging plans into the discussion. A short test drive cannot establish full-charge range, but it gives you an opportunity to understand the energy display and discuss which model fits your routine.
