You check your SUV’s tyre pressures before leaving home, then notice higher readings halfway through your journey. After a motorway drive, the numbers may look different again.

Does that mean the tyres have too much air?

Not necessarily. Tyre pressure normally rises as tyres warm up during driving. The important distinction is between the recommended pressure for a cold tyre and the reading you see after travelling. Understanding that difference helps you avoid a common mistake: releasing air from warm tyres to bring them back to the cold-pressure figure.

Why Tyre Pressure Changes During a Journey

As a tyre rolls, it repeatedly flexes where it meets the road. This generates heat, warming the tyre and the air inside it. As the air temperature increases, so does its pressure.

Outside temperature also affects the reading. A tyre checked early in the morning may show a different pressure later in the day, especially after exposure to sunlight and a long drive.

For Dubai drivers, this means a higher afternoon reading does not automatically indicate a problem. You need to consider when the pressure was checked and whether the tyres had warmed up. Continental recommends checking before driving, before temperatures rise and before direct sunlight heats the tyres.

What Does “Cold Tyre Pressure” Actually Mean?

“Cold” does not mean the weather needs to be cold. It means the tyres have not been heated by recent driving.

A tyre can be considered cold on a warm Dubai morning if the vehicle has been parked long enough for it to settle close to the surrounding temperature. Checking before your first journey, ideally while the vehicle is shaded, makes comparisons more consistent.

Michelin recommends checking after the vehicle has been unused for at least two hours, or after only a very short journey at low speed. Follow any more specific instructions in your vehicle’s owner’s manual.

Should You Release Air When the Reading Rises?

Do not release air simply because a warm tyre reads above the vehicle’s recommended cold pressure.

Imagine your tyres were correctly adjusted before leaving home. After driving, the readings rise as the tyres heat up. If you release air to restore the original numbers, the pressure will drop further when the tyres cool. You could then start your next journey with underinflated tyres.

This is why Michelin advises against deflating warm tyres. If you suspect genuine overinflation, check again when the tyres are cold and adjust to the vehicle manufacturer’s specification.

What Is the Correct Tyre Pressure for Your SUV?

There is no single pressure that suits every SUV in Dubai.

Use the recommendation on your vehicle’s tyre-pressure label or in its owner’s manual. The label is commonly located around the driver’s door opening. Check it carefully: the specified pressures may differ between front and rear tyres or according to passenger and luggage load.

Do not use a figure suggested for another SUV simply because it has similar-sized wheels. Likewise, the pressure marking on a tyre’s sidewall is not the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended everyday setting.

For an iCAUR, refer to the information supplied with your particular model and wheel specification. If anything is unclear, ask the AUTORUN team to help identify the correct settings.

What If a Tyre-Pressure Warning Appears?

A normal increase during driving and a low-pressure warning are different situations.

Cooler conditions can reduce pressure enough to trigger a warning, particularly when tyres were already close to the system’s warning threshold. Even if the warning disappears after the tyres warm up, check their cold pressures rather than assuming the issue has resolved itself. A monitoring system is useful, but it does not replace regular checks.

Pay particular attention to one tyre that repeatedly loses pressure. Have a tyre professional check the tyre, wheel and valve instead of continually topping it up without investigating the cause.

Does Tyre Pressure Affect REEV Driving Range?

Tyre pressure matters whether your SUV uses petrol, electricity or a range-extender system.

Underinflated tyres can increase rolling resistance, making the vehicle use more energy to travel. Keeping them correctly inflated supports efficiency as well as tyre life. However, adding extra pressure beyond the recommended setting is not an appropriate shortcut to better range; incorrect inflation can also affect grip and wear.

Pressure is only one part of the picture. Speed, air-conditioning use, load and road conditions also influence energy consumption, as our guide to why your REEV driving range changes from day to day explains.

Build the Check Into Your Routine

Check tyre pressures at least monthly and before a long journey, using a reliable gauge and the manufacturer’s cold-pressure recommendations. Inspect the tyres as well: a pressure reading alone cannot tell you everything about their condition.

The next time your tyre-pressure readings rise during a Dubai drive, consider the temperature before reaching for the air valve. A consistent cold-pressure check gives you a much better basis for deciding whether an adjustment is needed.
